Every January one or two come knocking on our door (or land in our inbox) asking for help with their tax return. If the taxpayer has been issued with a tax return (or notice to submit one) and has a UTR number, we should be able to help him submit the return online.
SEIS Forms
The UK tax system permits taxpayers to submit numerous claims and elections, but the law doesn’t always specify exactly what form that election or claim should take. Some claims can be made verbally by telephone to HMRC, others must be in writing but can be submitted in any free-hand format.
Paying HMRC
An essential part of your tax return service is telling our clients how much tax they have to pay and by what deadlines. This year we will also advise clients to consider how they plan to pay their tax bill, for instance by; cheque, credit/debit card, or electronic transfer.
Trust Registration Service
The HMRC programming pixies sometimes forget that the UK tax system would grind to a halt without the hard work and goodwill of tax agents. The online services they build are often designed without an “agents door”, leaving accountants to struggle on with paper forms, or even worse – excluding them from the process altogether.
Accounting For An APN
Since HMRC acquired the power to issue APNs in 2014, over 75,000 of those notices have been sent out to individuals and companies. As we explained in our newsletters on 15 July 2015 and 13 August 2015, the taxpayer has only 90 days to lodge objections to the APN or pay up.
